Even het verhaal schetsen.

I had some time to play around with the new family of webservices from opera, and decided to share my experiences with you guys. I'll give you a short description what every service does and tell you what I think about it. Of course these services are still in beta, so they'll probably have slight changes or improvements in the final version. But this article will give you a good general idea of what it's all about.
File Sharing
First, file sharing. Of course it's great you can just let someone search your hard drive for the file he or she wants but I think there are easier more secure ways to do it, like dropbox. Here you're computer has to be on, opera has to be running, you have to set up your account, set up a password, and share that password with everyone who wants to see you files. In a time where speed is important this is just too much. Of course you can make file access public, but then everyone can get files you maybe don't want to give free. In this aspect dropbox is much better. You just have to set-up your account, share a directory with some friends, and drag your files to that directory. Because dropbox logs in automatically (which opera doesn't?) it's much easier to get in sync. And although your files are on an external server, I don't think it's less safe.
Media Player
On the contrary to the file sharing service, I like this one. Most of us have large music collections. And it's really practical if you can just share your music library from your computer (with or without a password), and let yourself and other people play that music right from within a browser. So this is great but, there is something missing that they probably can't implement without breaking any piracy laws, a shame for an otherwise great feature.
Photo Sharing
Like with the media player, this can be really handy, but with people sharing more and more pictures through facebook, flickr, or other websites, I don't think this feature will be used much.
The Lounge
The lounge is a tool to invite friends into a chatroom you host, and have like a multichat with all of them. Think this one is good for people who want a secure talk. It's probably a little safer then msn or gtalk because things that are said go directly from you're computer to the one on the other end of the line, without the use of a server, but I don't think regular users need this level of secureness. Maybe a good way for employees in a company, who don't work in the same building or country, to comunicate, without the hassle of setting up an account on a public service.
Web Server
I like this one. Just put whatever website you want online, and have it published with a public url. Before I had to do this by configuring my internetrouter en making a webserver from my laptop. Of course this isn't something you use when you put a website online for real, because your computer has to be on, and opera has to be running. But it's great in development fase when working on and testing a website with several people. If I can give you a small tip. It's great in combination with dropbox (I must love dropbox, this is the second time I mention it). Share a folder, make a website in that folder, set up the webserver for that folder, done.
The fridge
This is the feature, for some unknown reason, I like the most. It's really simple. You have a fridge yourself and other people can put little post-its on it. It's like the wall on facebook, or like a guestbook on a website, and it has a really nice interface, which you see on the photo on top of this article.
In general, I think the guys at opera have some great ideas. It's a lot simpler then setting up your own server, and doing all these things. But I think it's still too hard and too much to handle. They are againts the concept of having a server in between, but this is just the thing that can make, having all these features in one place, great. With a server you could just share and sync, without having to worry about your computer and opera being on or off.

Yesterday I read an interesting article about how twitter will change our life in the future. You can read this article here. It gives a good impression what twitter is used for, how people use it, and how twitter will change peoples lifes as well.
When visiting twitter for the first time, i thought this was just another stupid invention that would die a slow dead eventually. But then I started using it, and it changed the way I looked at the internet and at social networking. While in the past the first site I visited when opening a webbrowser was facebook, looks like it's twitter now. So it already changed my life for that fact.
Back to my first visit. I thought, well all people with their own website do it, I'll make myself a twitter. So I did and I posted my first "tweet". Okay, that was cool? No it wasn't. After the second tweet I didn't log in to the my account for some time, untill more people started using it. Common people, without a blog, without a website, they all started using twitter, so I picked up where I left and started posting tweets again. Now I must say, I'm already addicted.
But like I did, when going to twitter.com for the first time, you'll think, what's so interesting about it? You got 140 characters to spill your guts, it's like those status updates on facebook. Well honest, I don't know. Maybe it's voyeurism that lies in people's nature, you can easily stalk someone on twitter for that matter. Or maybe it's just the common interest people have in eachother and in things that can make their life easier.
On twitter you have capabilities you've never dreamed of. You can follow celebrities, know everything about them and you can even leave them public or private messages, on which most of the time they will even answer if they're frequent users. People talk to eachother, people that have never seen one another in real life.
Everybody lives in harmony, and all it took was one small, simple internet-application, twitter. No clutter like with facebook, just simple short messages. Twitter is great. I love twitter.
Please make a twitter and follow me @twitter.com/kristofvc. Thanks ;-).

What's the deal with people you never saw in your entire life adding you as a friend on facebook? What's the deal with people like Sven M (28 friends, this one is just starting), Sawdust B, Steven "Hermes" S (1636 friends!) and Peter K (1245 friends)? What's the deal? Do they want to compensate their lack of social skills in real life? Is it cool to have 500 friends, from which you only know a few?
NO, it's not cool at all. Please stop inviting me when I never saw you, don't know your name and never talked to you. You won't be lucky because I tend to ignore those people's request and send them a hate-message.
On a side-note please stop inviting me to install all those terrific applications and stop telling me which bad-ass supervillain you are or what you're doing every moment of the entire day.
Thank you.
